BADIs has a history of being able to attract good speakers to it’s meetings, we have had a number of speakers from DSA / DVSA including Robin Cummins, at the time the Chief Driving Examiner, and Trevor Wedge, who went on to become Chief Driving Examiner, and John Sheridan, an Assistant Chief Driving Examiner, on a number of occasions. We have also had speakers from the major national ADI organisations, chief examiners from RoSPA and Diamond, current and past chairmen of IMTD, and several leading figures and experts from the ADI world.

We are also lucky that we have amongst our membership some speakers that are extremely knowledgeable and experienced, and have held senior positions in various national ADI and road safety organisations.

Details of our past meetings are below.

Past venues

We do seem to have moved about. The venues listed in the right hand column of the table above are described below:

  1. Our first venue (which saw our inaugural meeting on Wednesday 27th January 2000) was the Ancient Order of Foresters, 581 Pershore Road, Selly Oak, Birmingham, B29 7EL. This was at the corner of Oakfield Road and Pershore Road, just behind BBC Pebble Mill.

It was a good venue, chosen because of its central location, easy access, spaciousness and good facilities. It was already known to BADIs' founding members as they met there on the first Monday of each month as members of Birmingham Advanced Motorists.

The venue was paid for privately by its founding members, but the cost was more than BADIs was likely to be able to afford in the short term. So we had to look elsewhere. More recently, in the early 2000s, the building was boarded up, and is no longer in use.

  1. Our second venue (which hosted our second meeting, on Tuesday 13th June 2000) was Room S56 at Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College, Balsall Heath Road, Birmingham, B12 9DS. This cost us very little, but, being a small classroom, would not suit our needs as we expanded. So, we kept looking.
  2. Our big breakthrough came when Ranjit Bhatti, new to our committee in 2000, secured for us our best ever venue to date: the Smethwick Asian Resource Project, 58-60 Waterloo Road, Smethwick, B66 4JN. We had a meeting room which was smart, modern, spacious, and bright. It had good audio-visual facilities, a small kitchen and drinks machine, and there were even photocopying facilities. And the cost? Free! Well done, Ranjit!

Our first meeting there, on Thursday 28th September 2000, was a cracker, with Tony Read, DSA SE(ADI) held an open forum. We were clearly in no hurry to move on, and began to use the same venue (again, free of charge) to coach BADIs members taking the Diploma in Driving Instruction. However, all good (free) things do seem to come to an end, and towards the end of 2002 funding from Birmingham City Council for the resource centre was lost, and the venue closed. We had to cancel the meeting scheduled for 3rd April 2002, and look elsewhere.

  1. We spent more than five years at our fourth venue, Quinborne Community Centre, Ridgacre Road, Birmingham, B32 2TW, our first there being on Wednesday 7th August 2002 and our last on Thursday 12th February 2008. The staff were always helpful, but the rooms could be noisy. With wooden floors promoting echoes, and the adjacent room (separated only by a thin moveable room divider) hosting tap dancing, piano or table tennis, our speakers sometimes had to demonstrate their voice projection skills. Nevertheless, it was good value, had some free car parking, and played host to many prestigious speakers.
  2. Our fifth venue, which we began using on Wednesday 9th April 2008, is Ladywood Community and Health Centre, Saint Vincent Street West, Birmingham, B16 8RP. Suggested my committee member Constantine Brown, Just off the south west quadrant of Birmingham's middle ring road (A4540) it is far more central than our previous two venues. It is still good value for money, has free car parking, good facilities, and should now attract potential members from more of Birmingham than was previously the case.
  3. Our sixth, and current venue is Edgbaston Community Centre, 40 Woodview Drive, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 2HU. It is our most central venue to date, close to Bristol Road, (A38) and Lee Bank Middleway, (A4540), the middle ring road. It is in a quiet residential area behind MacDonalds. The venue is modern, and has it’s own car park.
